I woke up at 6 this morning, which never happens. I've wasted my morning so far watching math videos, because I am just that awesome. [Stick Number Games]

They're closing the university at 5:30 today because apparently this is what they do.

I swear the university is actively trying to get me to not get any work done. I don't have a working computer at home that I can write my thesis on. Bloody hell.

Well, at least I have my latest draft printed so I can do the editing thing. I'll probably see if any of the tea shops are open so I can sit in a tea shop and edit.

Me: How serious could it be, really. I don't have a decluttering icon.
D.: No icon? D: D: D:
Me: I know!
D.: Well, you better hop on that.

(Then I looked for icons. Self, stop doing that. You have things to do.)

iliketea: Lead me not into temptation... especially bookstores! (book stores)
A couple of days ago I went off to Chapters for some stupid reason or another. (The reason was stupid because I didn't have any money, my Chapters giftcards were at home, and I try to avoid buying at Chapters because I like my local indy bookstore and prefer to support them. But every year my parents get me a Chapters giftcard for my birthday and it would be churlish to refuse.)

Oh, right, there was coffee.

Lost Girl

This is the best pic-spam of Lost Girl yet. But I may be saying that because I'm fully on Team Lauren and being told in advance that the latest episode is all about the Team Lauren is putting me in my happy place.

I so want to write fic. I have some awesome fic ideas. I just need to sit down and write them.

(Tag explanation: It's a bit embarrassing to me how much Lost Girl hits all of my buttons, so I want to rec it to people I know, except then they'd know too much about me. /o\)

I was hoping to find this story someplace other than livejournal, but sadly, I haven't come across it yet. Note, please, the LJ is now not only doing random interstitial ads (ones that come up, block the page, and you have to click on them for them to go away), some of which have sound. This may not happy if you're logged into LJ, though.

This is another re-read for me: Where My thought's Escaping by [livejournal.com profile] snorkackcatcher.

This is a great mid-length Deathly Hallows compliant fic that focuses on what Cho was doing during the final book.

The bulk of the fic takes place in Wizarding China, creating a believable and interesting backstory for Cho's family. There's a bit of a genre of Harry Potter stories that try and create a broader Wizarding world. A lot of them end of falling into the trap of the Exotic Orient. I feel this fic doesn't do that at all - it shows a China with a history that accounts for the past 70 or so years. As well, the fic deals a lot with Cho's combination of culture shock and the feeling of looking like everyone around you. Is Guangzhou home? Is Edinburgh home? Or is it someplace in between?

If I were going to mildly complain about anything, it's that Cho's siblings are such non-entities as to hardly exist, but at the same thing the bits of their story (one is going to Wizarding school, the other isn't) do add a lot to the theme of "what is home".

This is another fic I like where friendships between characters played an important role. While it isn't the theme to the extent it is in "Like a fish needs a bicycle", it's still obvious that the author considered the importance of Cho's friendship with Marietta, and her aborted romance/ongoing friendship (and maybe going back to romance?) with Michael Corner. She also takes a character that only appeared in JKR's notes, Su Li, and manages to give her a tiny bit of background in order to flesh out Cho's relationships with everyone else.

I also really enjoyed reading the Battle of Hogwarts from Cho's point of view.

This is a bit of longer fic (20k). I enjoyed the re-read and would probably read it again if I were looking for something a bit meaty and plotty but not too long to finish in an evening.

I just finished re-reading one of my favourite fics, Like a Fish Needs a Bicycle, by [personal profile] netgirl_y2k.

It's a Morgana-centered fic in which Morgana confesses to Arthur that's she gay, and that she doesn't want to marry a man. They spend a bit of time trying to sort out how to ensure that Morgana won't be stuck in an unhappy marriage, Arthur teases her about falling in love with knights, and I think it manages to poke a bit at the way the storyline of Merlin basically assumes that happily ever after is going to involve a wedding.

What I really like about this fic is that it's basically all about Morgana's friendships, primarily with Arthur and to a lesser extent with Gwen. Although Morgana ends up in a sexual relationship with Vivian, it's basically a friends (or frenemies? do we use that term in fandom?) with benefits sort of thing.

I also found this fic funny, in a giggle sort of way, but I must admit my favourite thing about Merlin is Morgana's gentle mocking of Arthur, which is a theme that runs pretty much through this fic.

The story mostly focuses on the time before the series begins, with a bit of overlap into when Gwen and Merlin come onto the scene (although Merlin is almost entirely absent), but continues on until the end of both Arthur and Morgana's lives.

The author rates this as PG-13, but I probably wouldn't. There's just discussions about sex - all the sex takes place in fades-to-black.

This is the sort of fic I would re-read if I were having a bad day and wanted a nice pick-me-up.

I like to talk about tea. I also like to talk about fic, vids, fandom, picspams, and why you should(n't) be watching Lost Girl. I'm just getting settled.
